2nd Annual Physician Event – August 7, 2014

Gateway Alliance for Compassionate Care at End of Life Presents:

Difficult, but Not Impossible:

The Physician’s Role with Advance Directives

Guest Speakers: J. Paul Newell, MD & Susan Andresen, Ed.D.

August 7th, 2014

GOAL:

To increase knowledge and confidence in the physician’s role with advance directives in end-of-life care.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  •  Understand and name the barriers to obtaining and implementing advanced directives,
  •  Recognize an optimal process and model for developing advanced directives,
  •  Identify the physician’s critical role in implementing an effective process.

THE SPEAKERS:

Drs. Andresen & Newell were extensively involved in early and ongoing efforts in Georgia to raise community and professional awareness about the importance of advance directives. In addition, in the early 1980s, Dr. Newell was the inaugural medical director for what is now Hospice of Southern Illinois. Dr. Andresen was responsible for training allied health professional students in using a planning guide for initiating conversations about end of life decisions.

Through an open conversation, we will explore ways in which advance care planning and directives can support the wishes of the dying and their families and lift some of the burden from their health care professionals; and how to create timely, structured, and helpful conversations with patients and their families about end of life care.
